Describe a little bit about yourself and your interest in triathlon
I "discovered" triathlon in 2017 after I compressed two vertebrae in my back. Luckily, the injury was not as bad as it sounds, and I began swimming again as part of my rehab. I'd been recreationally road cycling for a few years, so that winter, I figured I would add in a bit of running, something I had always loathed, and try a sprint triathlon. That summer I finished the Wellfleet Sprint Tri on Cape Cod and was hooked.
Prior to my first race, I knew only one person who competed in triathlons, and had viewed it as an individual sport. After the 2017 season, when I began tranining in earnest, I realized the level of teamwork and cameraderie involved in triathlon is rivaled nowhere else that I had competed, even in traditional team sports.
The following two years I continued to add races and distances, and cannot really describe the exhilaration I got from the events, the crowds and fellow athletes/teammates. The energy and excitement, even the training (well, most of it), especially after my first half Ironman, are difficult to describe.
COVID-19 overruled what would have been my first full distance Ironman, but triathlon has taught me to persevere, and in 2021, I completed Ironman Lake Placid! Few things in life have left me speechless, but to see my wife and friends for the 4th time that day as I approaced the chute, crossing the finish line at dusk, and hearing Mike Reilly declare me an Ironman, left me without words. Can't wait for the next, but will never forget the first!
