Team D3 Athletes
in Action

This calendar serves as our guide to provide race support and encouragement. Based on the calendar, we provide teammate introductions, encourage race-meet ups, and where multiple athletes are racing, we will coordinate a larger series of activities including race recon, post-race events, and other opportunities to share our Team cammarederie.  Plus, athletes share their race reports, and teammates learn important race strategies from their experiences.

The race this morning didn't feel good. I felt like I wasn't performing well, felt sick after the first run. I got on the bike and tried to hold around 200W for the bike. I knew the second run was going to hurt. I wasn't looking forward to the results. So I took some time away from the screen and spent it with the fam. I just looked over my times and was completely shocked. I came away with a new PB, 6 minutes faster than my last PB. Trust in your coach and put the work in (I didn't put 100% of the work in) and you will have a great outcome. Thank you so much Coach Mike, I couldn't do this day-to-day without your encouragement and support.

This was a Virtual Marathon. I did it on a treadmill in my family room and watched March Madness on the big screen. I started at 8.6 MPH with 1% grade and eventually increased to 9.0 MPH after 10 miles. I had my gels and hydration on a TV Tray next to the treadmill so I wouldn't have to stop. I did hit the wall around mile 24 and had to slow down to 8.4 MPH but had banked enough time to still go under 3 hours. If anyone has ever been to Modesto, you know that there are no hills. The only climbing is the over passes, so the 1% grade was appropriate. The race director sent out an email back in December and announced that the race was virtual ( again) due to the pandemic.

I love this event - a pinnacle multisport start of season mark since 1999 -because even in a "normal" year all the athletes and spectators and volunteers and race organizers are just so HAPPY! Even in driving sleet and crazy April weather. And THIS year - wow, so much happiness. Great weather and so much gratitude to be back out there! Every single racer gave encouragement on the course - we all found the breath to say "good job!" and "you've got this!" I was grinning like a fool the whole time. Various parts of my body protested throughout the race both run and bike, as though I didn't quite remember how to do all of this. And that second 5k after the bike - yowza. But I finished with my lungs burning and feeling elated.

Great result on a tough day. Didn’t have the swim I wanted and I had a challenging T1. Just some technical issues that were influenced by the very long run from the swim to T1 and the. From T1 to mount. Should have just put my cycling shoes on at the rack instead of pre-clipping them. My bike split with respect to planned power was perfect!!!! But it was windy and getting hot. My run plan came together and I just missed hitting my average pace goal by 3-seconds. Ran up the leaderboard from 4th to 2nd. Qualified for IM70.3 WCs!

This race was 1 mile swim, 40 mile bike, 9 mile run. Super fun distance. My first time doing this race or racing at this venue. Swim was 2 loops with a short beach run between loops. Water was a little choppy making the swim away from shore a bit of a challenge. Bike was 2 loops. Roads were mostly chip seal and a little rough, which tended to slow me down some. Course had some rollers but no serious climbs (~1400 ft elevation gain over the 40 miles). Run was mostly paved paths through the park with lots of shade. Several turns and the course was a bit confusing. My only panic of the day was missing a turn (don't listen to the volunteers when they say "just go straight!"). After getting back on course, the run was really fun. Garmin said there was 371 ft of elevation gain over the 9 miles, but inclines were gradual and not too taxing. The race was well organized and supported well with volunteers. Overall good experience, and I would definitely do this race again. This was my first triathlon race since 2019 and I was definitely a little rusty in terms of racing. It felt good to be competing again. I need to learn to trust my training on the bike and push my effort. I can do this on the run but on the bike I need to get comfortable with being uncomfortable (i.e. suffer a little more)!

CapTex is an extremely popular race offering 3 distances and a cool venue in downtown Austin, TX. This was a training race for me so I had no real expectations other than to just go all out and see what I could do. Swim is held in “Townlake” with very calm waters (but kind of dirty). Water temp was 75 so I wore a wetsuit. My swim was uneventful and my time was just so-so. T1 is fairly long but was pretty smooth for me. Bike course is so much fun! For the Sprint, 2 loops and the course goes through downtown Austin. There are a few turns, but the course is pretty flat. My bike went well and my bike split was 19th fastest overall, which is pretty good for me. I had one minor “bump” going into T2. I got a little confused at the entrance and wound up in the Oly transition area rather than the Sprint area. In my defense, others made the same mistake. I had to backtrack and probably lost 30 sec. (which probably cost me a couple of places in the overall). Run course is pretty flat and fast. It started raining pretty hard about a mile into the run, which was fine for me, but I felt bad for the people still on the bike. I really tried to push the run and my HR was pegged. I held strong and finished well. Overall, I’m happy with this performance finishing 13th OA with over 400 people finishing the Sprint distance. I had a hard training day two days earlier and I was happy with how my legs responded to the challenge.

Not fast but not my slowest. The swim was slow as I knew it would be based on missing so much swim training. The swim started slow but I found my pace on the second half of the course and pushed hard so that is a positive. The bike was not terrible but not as fast as I would like and the run was steady and consistent just not as fast as normal. Transitions were slow (my wife asked if I was reading the paper). In the end I did this race just to get my feet wet again. I did not go into this to PR and just wanted to get the mindset of racing again before my big race later this year. Mission accomplished and I am happy with how the day went so it was a success! It was awesome to get to race again and I am counting the days to the next one!

I'm not too sure what to make of my result. I trained well. And felt that I was in a position to complete in around 11 hours. I swam 1:08 and was happy with that. Unfortunately, I just didn't have any power in the legs all day. The last 100k of the bike course was into a strong headwind. I had planned for this so tried to ride to the power range that I had set myself for the day. I could not hold it.Off the bike in 06:10:00 ( My slowest ever by far !!) But figured that I would have a solid run. So I wasn't too concerned. This was not to be unfortunately. My feet had fallen asleep for the last 60K on the bike. So it took a while to feel them again. My goal was to aim for a steady pace. But was unable to do so. Finishing the run in 0:4:35:00. I've got to say that I was not the only one that didn't perform as well as they expected. Iron man racing is challenging. And I have had my fair share of good days. But when you have a bad day like I did. I think you find out more about yourself and what you can achieve. I just had to dig deep all day and follow the D3 way. I have Sunshine Coast 70.3 coming up in 14 weeks. And am following another of coach Jim's plans. So I will get to the start line with confidence and ready to have another crack.

Ironman 70.3 Blue Ridge Report – June 6, 2021 Swim went off without a hitch - dock entry start, 3-4 swimmers jumping in at same time, very orderly; turns at buoys were typically crowded as expected; exit was the most full-contact I have ever experienced. The “funnel” exit was like a rugby scrum. Ride was tough but fun - one of my strengths is hill-climbing. Driving the course day before was hugely helpful. IM reported the climb at 1,400 feet over 4 miles which was directionally accurate. Entering Blue Ridge Parkway after the 4 mile climb, there was another mile, 200+ more vert (see importance of previewing course above). Overall, by my Garmin, 3725 feet of climbing Buckle up for the descent - dropping the first 1300 feet in about 3 miles. Rest of ride pretty much rolling with forgiving ups and downs, eventually into the city. Run: 90 degrees entire time, approx. 50% humidity. Very crowded. On the ends of the two loop course, outbound and inbound runners shared the same paved pathway, maybe 6 feet wide. Rubbing elbows was not uncommon, and anyone who wasn’t moving was a near roadblock. Aid stations and volunteers were from heaven. I dumped a cup of ice down my back and in my hat at all 12 stations. They’d still be peeling me off the pavement if not for those well-stocked volunteers Wind – non factor during any of race I was very pleased with my results (only my second 70.3), and could not be more pleased that to have signed on with D3. On to Lake Placid July 25. A little comparison to the power of D3, Mike and his incredible team! 2019 Quassy – Ironman CT70.3 – Without D3, using TriDot 895/1893 overall 711/1331 Male 126/261 AG 2021 IM Blue Ridge 70.3 – With D3 422/1547 314/940 49/151 Short story: Jumped from bottom half of pack to top third with hard work and Team D3!

Thunderstorms delayed the race for 3 hours. The bike course was shorten to 27 miles because of the delayed start. Water temperature was 81 so swim was not wetsuit legal. My swim time was not great so I knew I would have to make up ground on the bike and run. Swim exit to transition was about 1/2 mile. On the run up, I stripped my swimskin down to my waist. I was in and out of T1 a little too fast because I forgot to take my swimskin off. I realized about a mile into the bike. Oh well, a little extra drag. I hoped no one would notice my silly mistake. The shortened bike course was flat, out and back with a bit of a headwind going out. I started a little conservatively, and my legs were not feeling great for the first several miles. I finally got going and pushed up the pace. My effort was decent and kept me in the game. The weather had cleared and it was sunny and getting hot. The run course was 2 loops and mostly flat. Pace was good in the early miles and I was on target. I was hydrating, taking BASE salt and pouring water on my head to manage the heat. I tried to pick up pace as I got into the second half and HR edged up. I was really feeling the heat as I hit the last 5k and I knew my pace had slowed as my HR went up. I pushed to the finish and felt like I gave it a best effort. Time was ~3 min slower than target, but I’m not sure how I would have gotten that speed on this day. Nutrition was a big question mark. With shortened bike, my plan went out the window. I probably didn’t take in as many calories as I should have, but I didn’t feel like I had any kind of bonk. I think my slowing pace on the run had more to do with the heat and humidity (probably 90 degrees at that point) than nutrition. My effort was good enough for 2nd place AG, 1:36 behind the winner. I still need to improve in hitting my numbers on the bike, which might have made the difference. The result was good enough for me to qualify for IM 70.3 World Championship, which was my primary goal at this race. Overall, a great experience even with the uncertainty of the weather delays.

Well executed In all 3 disciplines. Red Bull for bike nutrition was all I needed. Probably should work on my run speed. Focused on being more aero with less power. Just chased average speed. Not concerned with power

Swim was faster than I’d hoped so off to a great start. After recent open water swims I figured I’d finish about 1:20, but was out of water at 1:10. Ironman time gave me 1:50/100 but Garmin had 1:44. Totally fine with 1:44 swimming with 1,500 of my close friends Bike went essentially as planned, not as fast as I'd like, but temps jumped a lot earlier than predicted when the sun shone early, and with the heat, came more wind. The wind on 3 Bears was formidable both times, worse on secodn loop (predictable) and that straight climb out of Jay is straight painful My run started strong and faded fast with heat and the 100+ miles behind, so I fast walked/jog when I felt a bit off or on tough inclines, and ate about 6 bananas. My Base salt got a bit fouled by all the humidity and early rain, so I went without for about last 20 miles, and had to substitute at aid stations. At the end of the day, in the twilight, Mike Reilly, whose hand I shook a minute before starting the swim as he walked around with his mic, declared me an Ironman, and you can't buy that online. The month's (years) of hardwork were worth every second. Special thanks for all of D3, especially Mike Ricci, for keeping my head screwed on straight and helping me through the highs and lows of the training cycle. We had a plan, stuck to it, and delivered. So great to yell a D3 out on the course, or hear someone do the same, while struggling along. The supoport is real - Rock on D3!

I raced this to complete a journey and carry my mother's picture over the finish line. I raced LP in 2016 in honor of my mother and lost her photo on the course somewhere so I vowed to go back and carry her across, which I did! As for the race, it went well. The conditions were hard with rain in the morning, wind on the bike, and humidity on the run. I went out conservative on the swim and by lap 2 was really struggling to finish. I was stopping a lot and avoiding making eye contact with the kayakers so I would not get tempted to quit. My stomach was hurting and I felt nauseous, which has never happened to me on a swim. I pushed through and finished with a slow time but got it done. T1 was slow and deliberate as I was not there to PR but had a much more personal goal. I was conservative on the first lap of the bike, probably too conservative but it wasn't too bad. The wind kicked up and there was a good headwind on the back end of the course, which IMO is the hardest part of that course. This made for a tough ride and a little slower then planned but still okay. Nutrition was on point and I went into the run feeling great. About one mile in the run my left hamstring started to cramp pretty bad causing me to stop and stretch. I was able to work it out and set in at a comfortable pace for the first few miles. Half way through the run the cramp came back and my lower back started hurting. My back had been a little achy leading up to the race but I thought I had worked it out. Not so much. My run became a walk/ run but not one of my famous death marches that I have done in a few IM races. In the end I worked through it and pushed hard on the last two miles running my best pace to the finish line. In all this was a great race. My fitness was not great but I had a decent day and most importantly carried Mom across the finish line. In the end I posted my third fastest marathon split out of the seven IM races I have done and did this one 45 minutes faster then 2016 so not a bad day.

Race was on the Texas A&M campus and put on by the Aggie Tri Club. Super sprint distance (400 m swim, 10.1 mile bike, 5k run). Small race with 164 total finishers. I did this race as a training race to get ready for USAT nationals. Pool swim. Fun course with bike and run going through the A&M campus. This was my first race with a pool swim. My swim was not great and I spent the bike and run chasing down a bunch of college kids. I was on pace to have a solid time but 2 miles into the run, I had a pretty bad sharp pain in my hamstring. I shut it down and jogged to the finish losing probably a minute. Overall, it was a cool venue and a fun race.

This race had the feeling of a small, home-grown race. There was very little "pomp and circumstance", no loud-speaker pre-race, no race officials that I saw, and lots of friendly people. The swim was a deep-water start (just off of a boat ramp) and ended about 20 yards from transition. The boat ramps were nice -- you get to skip the sand in between your toes. The bike was well marked with cones and volunteers. There were a handful of false-flats and slight-head-wind sections that left me wondering why I was going SO SLOW... but the corresponding downhills made up for it. The run was a quick out-and-back that got a little cumbersome right around transition/the finish line/the best place to spectate. But nothing too crazy. All said, it was a nice little race, and I look forward to doing it again next year!

"DNM" = Does Not Matter. This was my first triathlon since 2017. I due to life I was only able to train off and on for three months, but put together a race plan and am really happy with the result. My last race in 2017 was the River Roux 70.3 in Louisiana. I completed that with a time of 6:54:57 after a year filled with 5 other triathlons and lots of training. So, finishing the Boulder distance 50 minutes slower on a more challenging bike course and race-walking instead of running was a big win.

This was my first non-virtual triathlon since September of 2019. I was overweight and undertrained. I had just completed my first week of training for Ironman Arizona and didn't taper but did substitute this race for the planned training that day. I didn't use my tribike as it needed a tuneup and I didn't feel safe using it. I used my road bike instead but thought this would be a good option because of the Hills. First mistake! Bike was brand new with only two rides on it. I also used a different set of cycling shoes and did not leave the shoes clipped in for a quick T1. I told myself this was a practice race and decided not to push it. I really liked the extra Granny gears the road bike offered on this course. There is a portion of the course with about 4 miles of climbing at about 4% grade. Afterwards a lot of rollers and then a lightning fast descent. I will say that this was my slowest 40K since 2005. No worries, afterall, I was close 190 pounds. I gained a lot of weight over the lockdown. I know I went out of order. There isn't much to say about the swim. For this race, they take you out on a ferry then drop you off at a barge where you swim 1500 meters along a buoy line. The winds was high which made the water really choppy. I only had a few open water swims prior to the race so knew not to expect a lot. I started conservative and then got in a good rhythm but was extra careful to avoid over swimming. Swim was about 3 minutes slower than my usual 1500. No worries. This was a practice race. The run went as expected. Rule of thumb is about 10 seconds faster for every pound over race weight. My ideal weight is between 160 - 165 pounds. So the 55 minute 10K was about what I expected. I started the Keto diet the following Monday.

Pretty happy with this result and a PR at this distance for me! My goal was to beat my old Sunset time and go under 3 hours. Mission accomplished! The swim was tough due to a really bad sun glare going out. I think the entire field went off course more then once. That said my swim was still four minutes faster than my swim at Lake to Lake in June so starting to see results on the swim front. I lost about five minutes in T1 due to a potty break that was not going to let me off the hook! I thought I got it all out before the race but apparently not! I had a great bike (1:14:10), which is a PR for me at this distance! I felt really good going into the run. My run was really solid for me (56:32) and was a PR for this course! All in all a great and successful race for me!

My best race this year. I did the keto diet and lost 15 pounds in less than a month. I was 5 weeks into my training for Ironman Arizona. I didn't do a taper since my recovery day was written into the Friday before the race. I had to drive about 2 hours to get to the event. I didn't eat breakfast thinking I could grab something healthy en route. No such luck. Relied on gas station food to fuel my race. Got there early. Barely made it to the Port a Potty (there were only two). While taking care of business, I noticed a highly agitated and ominous looking spider. It looked like a black widow spider but coloring was off. Learned later it was called an Orb Weaver. Not poisonous but will bite when threatened. I managed to avoid getting bitten. I got there early enough to find a nice transition area just short of T1 exit. I got everything set up nicely (power meter paired and ready, gel flask in place and Xlab Torpedo filled). I clipped in and banded my bike shoes. All else laid out in perfect order. Then the USAT Official came by and told me my helmet was not legal. Fortunately I had my road helmet in the truck. Everyone avoid buying helmets from Lightning in a Box. Your helmet needs to say CPSC. That was my only small glitch. We walked from T1 to the swim start 1500 meter up the river. It was a time trial start and I placed myself near the top third. This is always a fast swim as it is current aided. I finished in the 18 minute range. I stripped off my wetsuot while putting on my helmet and started faster than some of people who finished the swim before me. I didn't pay too much attention to my power output. This was a target rich environment for me. I counted 17 people ahead of me at the first turnaround and proceeded to past about two more. I knocked off another two on the second lap. T2 was a little off and I ended up sitting instead of standing to get my shoes on. Still a fast transition and the sea legs weren't too bad. I was able to pass three more people on loop one but two others passed me. I knocked off one more on loop two but got passed with 3/4 mile to go. In the end, I actually had a new FTP for 2021 and improved my 10K in 2021 by four minutes. I won my age group and was 20th overall. Afterwards, I went to celebrate at a nice Brewery and Grill, sat on the patio overlooking the Columbia River and had a nice lunch with a cold brew.

The swim is in saltwater, in the bay by Bader Field. Our swim was during low tide and water levels were *really* low in some areas. This could pose problems for some. It also meant coming out of the water with some muck in random places. I had read about traffic in the water being an issue in previous years but it was not the case for the 2021 edition. If seeded properly (a little "slower" than you expected finish is best IMO), you can enjoy a nice swim. The bike course is flat and has 2 and 1/2 loops on a mix of roads. Road conditions were fine and the temperature was reasonable at that time. The run and all up and down the boardwalk. Some love it some don't. The course had 10 or 11 aid stations, well supplied with everything you might need. The wood is easier on the knees but staying cool, in the sun, with no opportunity for shade was a bit of a challenge. Overall, great organization. I found everything well planned. The volunteers were absolutely fantastic, motivating, and helpful.

Race Report

Anyone that was at this race knows how tough it was. In addition to a difficult course, the storm that brought wind, rain, and hail made it mentally and physically challenging. My swim was decent for me, and I got on the bike feeling good. Bike started good and I was feeling confident. I could see the storm coming in and I knew we would be in for a tough time. Wind came about half way into the bike and brought blowing sand. My speed slowed to a crawl. Then came the rain and hail, and it was slow going. I started to feel some fatigue about 35 miles in and my confidence suffered. By the time I got to Snow Canyon the rain had stopped. I slogged up the 5 mile climb not feeling very good. I sped down the hill to transition knowing I needed to go on the run. Coming into transition, I looked at my bike split and was devastated with the time (forgetting about the time lost with the storm, and the tough course). My mental state was not good going into the run. Another round of hard rain hit during the run, which didn't help. By the time I got to the second loop of the run, my race was over. I went into survival mode and made it to the finish. My slowest run split in a 70.3 in years. I was extremely disappointed with my performance. Lessons learned: 1) Don't get hung up on the clock - you have to continue t race; 2) Stay in the game mentally - Don't let the lows of a race affect the rest of your day. I'm hoping for some redemption at this race in 2022.

Moving closer and closer to podium. Two years ago I was 6th in this race and I was 7th in Oktoberfest that year as well. I pushed hard today and had a subpar swim but the 3rd fastest bike split in my AG and the 4th fastest run, hence 4th place! Transitions were okay but need to be faster! I will definitely stand on a podium in 2022!

Great race and my first true podium! I went into this with a goal of 1:25 minutes and achieved that plus earned a spot on the podium. This became two races in one for me as I had a five mile head to head battle with the 4th place male. I went out fast for me (7:40) but felt pretty good and thought I could maintain that for most of the ten miles. I also knew I was in third place for the men based on the first out and back turn on the course. The first place male was flying and I knew I wouldn't catch him but thought maybe he would blow up- he didn't. The second place was moving pretty good as well so I focused on finding a pace that I knew I could maintain for the entire race. I knew I was ahead of most of the pack with the exception of one guy. He passed me at mile one and at that point I decided to settle in just behind him and not push him to a point that would cause me to over work and blow myself up. We ran like this for the next four miles. I would apply a little pressure to test him but not too much. I started to notice his breathing pattern getting more labored at about 5 miles and his form started looking tired. I decided to make my move and passed him. I separated myself by at least a minute and this lasted until about mile 7. I realized he closed the gap quite a bit so I told myself this is a 5K now and I am racing one person. My legs hurt but I knew I had more in the tank so I kicked it up a notch and took off. My best pace was in those miles and I ended up beating him by 2:25! I cannot be happier with this result! This podium spot has been a long time coming and I am so excited to have finally earned a spot!

Ironman Florida Race Recap: The swim was deceiving tough! From the beach, the current didn’t look like it was going to have a major impact and the chop out at the turn buoys did not look to be as difficult as it was. I was right on pace for the first 1000m, holding under 6:45 500m pace with the first one being under 6:00 actually! Then the third 500m came in and everything slowed MASSIVELY. I didn’t see the splits on my watch until I hit the beach for lap two, but the split time there was 35:00…which is WAY off for me. Oh well, readjust and head back into the water! Lap two for the swim was uneventful. Making my way through the crowds of athletes on their first lap was tough, but not impossible. Hitting the beach after lap two overall time was 1:12…almost 20 minutes off the time I was shooting for, so I was really ticked off running up. While running though, I heard a lot of people talking about “that was long” or “toughest swim” so that made me feel better. In T1, I took my time because the air temp was 45 degrees that morning. Slowest T1 of my life, but I took the time to put on gloves, arm sleeves, and a vest and I am very thankful that I did. Smooth transition, nonetheless, and out on the bike I was. Honestly, the bike was uneventful. I started towards the front of the age groupers so there really wasn’t a lot of people around me. I was cold the first 20 miles and then by mile 54 at gear drop, I took off the gloves and vest and felt perfect. There were headwinds and crosswinds for pretty much the first 70-ish miles, and then at the far turn before a long stretch back into PCB, it changed to a strong tailwind. Averages for the first 70mi was ~19mph @ 215w and 160 HR…that long stretch my averages were ~26mph @ 195w and 140 HR…big difference! I started to get sick of the bike around mile 105 and was ready to get off the bike and it was perfect timing because the crowds picked up and got me to the end. Body felt great the whole time! Bike split was 5:27 with two bathroom stops…I know I can go faster but for my first Ironman, I am pleased with it. I took in 5 bottles of Infinit, which was ~300 cal/hour and ~600mg of Na+/hour. Faster transition for sure in T2 with a quick pitstop before starting the run. Heading out on the run, I felt WAY better than I thought I would. Legs were feeling great, pace felt super easy, and I found it very easy to get into a good groove. My pace for the first half was right around 8:45/mi pace, which is right where I wanted it. From 14 – 21, legs started hurting a bit and I was able to keep moving, but things were slowing down. Miles 21-25 were an absolute suffer-fest. I attribute this mostly to having never run this long before (longest run going in was 17.5 miles) and the fact that I have never experienced a long day like this. After a couple pit-stops due to overhydration in cool temps, I hit mile 25 and just said “F&#$ it…just go!” and started running as fast as I could. My last mile was back to where my pace had been for most of the run, and I finished strong! Making the turn into the finish line, which was a long straight-away with the crowd down the whole way, I was holding back tears the entire time and lost it when I rolled across. This was something that I have been working towards ever since I started racing as a 7-year-old; 21 years of dreaming about Ironman! My run split ended up being 4:06:05 with a 9:25/mi pace, and the overall time was 11:12:01. This was good enough for 17th of 82 in my AG and cracking the top 200 out of 1,701 athletes on the day. Run nutrition was perfect as well; 2 bottles of Infinit throughout the run (~300 cal/half marathon and ~600mg Na+/half marathon). I had gels with me that I took as needed, which ended up being 3 throughout the run. If I had to change anything in the run, I would start the coke around mile 18 vs mile 21. For my first Ironman, I am very pleased with the result. Ultimately, the main goal here was to finish; I had never done this distance before and really didn’t know what to expect on the day. The conditions didn’t help at all, and looking in hindsight, I would’ve broken 11:00 had the swim been a “normal” swim for me. Looking back on it, I wouldn’t change anything about it…I like tough conditions, my preparation was on point, my nutrition was on point, and I was able to race smart and tough. Looking ahead, I know that I can go faster, and I am itching to get to the start line of another Ironman. I will be taking 2022 to focus more on gaining more speed and strength and in 2023…I will be applying this to Ironman Chattanooga in 2023.

Solid race to end the season. My goal for this 4 mile race was 30:00 and I did it in 30:27 so pretty happy with that. My average pace was 7:36, which is tremendous for me. I executed my race plan exactly how I envisioned it and placed 9th out of 62 in my age group and 177th out of 1515 overall so that is pretty good. I was hoping to podium but there were some real speed demons in my age group!

It was a cold morning with wind blowing out of the north. The race was combined with the marathon so there were marathon pace groups. I tagged onto the 3:20 pace group that would put my half time around 1:40. Keeping pace was comfortable and I got some wind block running with the group. I left the group and picked up pace for the last 5k. Overall, good effort for me and pace was about what I was targeting. Good pre-season test of fitness. Also, first time racing in carbon-plate shoes (Saucony Endorphin Pro). Legs felt fresh and I definitely felt I was faster.

Walked over at 0430 to setup transition which was really tight - bikes separated by 18” or less with running lanes no more than 3’ wide - this will be important info later - so the footprint under and around my bike was tiny. --- Walked about a mile to swim start, after pitstop at hotel room!, with other athletes in rain, and was convinced to leave my recovery sneakers by swim exit, because run to T1 was approx 0.6 miles. I’d never see those old Hokas again. --- Swim was great having not been in open water since October so I’ll take my 1:50s all day. One of two race criticisms: anyone including their mother was allowed in swim corral. Kids too young to swim; spouses, support crews and mothers as old as mine - 80. Draw your own conclusions, but that was absurd. --- Out of water unscathed and feeling great. If you do not own a swimskin I highly encourage it. Got my Roka over winter and swam with it at the Y a few times to acclimate to it. Get one. And thanks to Mike Ricci fir pointers on getting it fit right, especially pulling as much up into your shoulders as possible. --- Ran for my stashed shoes which were swallowed into the crowd, didn’t stop and ran carefully barefoot over pavement, mostly good, to T1. --- T1 was a mess for me. I lay everything out the same way for every race, and every race there’s something I cannot find. This time, it was my helmet visor/shield. I was looking everywhere for the shield. Thought I’d left it in transition bag because it was raining earlier. Decided it would have to be sunglasses, grabbed helmet and the shield was already already on it. Dumbass! --- Due to the confines of the transition area, before the race I had faced the visor into my bike on my aero bars in case it got bumped by another athlete on the way by. That’s 2 - 3 mins in the hopper that would prevent me from a sub 6hr race. I’m practicing T1 this summer. A lot. --- Bike way great with variable sun - clouds - rain but honking wind. Straight honking. Unscientific estimate felt like 2/3 of race was headwinds from 10:00 - 2:00 (think Driver’s Ed class) with crosswinds coming off ocean and on overpasses and bridges. Windiest race I’ve ever done, including a full 112 practice ride and full IM at Lake Placid. --- Criticism number 2: bike/rules-of-road. They did not exist in this race. Drafting - legal. Stay to right - don’t worry about it - go wherever you want, even wrong side of road. “On your left…” never heard of it. Sweet Mutha there was zero etiquette. I saw dozens of flats and breakdowns. I thought it was a pretty smooth track, and only had to avoid a handful of potholes, so I have to think inexperience played a role. Not racing inexperience - just proper cycling inexperience. I thought I was overreacting, but after talking to others who raced that day and with whom I’ve trained and raced before, this is was the consensus --- Anyway, good showing on bike, but time for an upgrade to a tri/TT bike. I’m sick of getting passed when I know I’m stronger. --- T2 fine, forgot to get sprayed with sunblock (volunteers rocked this race, all my fault) so the backs of my legs got toasted, but overall pretty good, especially coming from New England here warmest run this year was in the 40s. Miles 2 and 8 after the turn were particularly brutal with all sun - those miles when you question all of your life’s choices, but other than that, pretty predictable and a ton of fun. There was a local with a garden hose who hooked sprayed me down 4 times, and another with a cooler full of ziplock baggies with ice. Right down the bag of my kit that bag sat. --- Nutrition was spot on: one bottle Gatorade, half bottle water, one Gu, one Quantum Square every hour, plus the double Snickers kicker at the start of the ride. Occasional banana on rode and half bananas on run. --- The fans were outstanding. A bit more in your face, like the people alongside the Tour de France with the signs, but at least these folks were looking the right way. And the volunteers - kids and adults alike - they should have wings and halos. --- Finish: 41/133 AG 384/1148 Overall --- Threatening to dip into the 30% bracket… --- But nothing compares to coming down the chute. As I was about 50 yards from the finish I passed a fellow with one prosthetic leg. I got so excited and pumped up seeing and cheering him, I might have hit a new HR high. What a freakin inspiration! I’ll race here again gladly.

Awesome event - weather was perfect and the course was flat and fast. Managed to destroy my prior marathon PB of 3:29. I run using Stryd and my CP updated during the Zwift Duathlon season, and that gave me a lot of confidence to try and go big on this race. I went out with the 3 hour pace group and felt great with them for the first 9 miles, then started to really fatigue through mile 12. At mile 12 I decided I'd do what I could to stay with them through the half point but then allow myself to slow down a bit. It was a real struggle making it to 13.1 with them but I was thrilled that I did it and could slow down slightly. I then ran a bit in no man's land mostly solo and let my heart rate recover a bit for a few miles and then I picked up the pace to try and make sure I stayed ahead of the 3:10 pace group for as long as possible. The 3:10 group caught up to me at the 23 mile mark and that gave me a renewed desire to keep up with them. The 3:10 pacer was super encouraging and it was great to be in a small pack again. I hung with them until mile 25 at which point he told all of us to empty the tank and get in front of him, so I upped the intensity a bit and made sure I cross the line ahead of him. Really pleased with the race, it was a lot of fun. The pacers, the other runners, the crowds - everyone was just awesome - super positive atmosphere. I'll definitely be back at this event! Also, I signed up for the Whale Challenge - which means I ran their 8KM race the previous day. I managed to rank 5th overall with my combined 8KM (32:22) + Marathon time, amongst the other Whale Challenge participants.

A good early season race for me. Started off with a sub-par swim and was 22nd (AG) out of the water. A good bike (4th fastest AG) got me back into contention. Solid run (3rd fastest AG) put me on the podium for 3rd AG. Also got a 70.3 World Championship qualifying spot, which was my goal for this race.

Race Report

I had high expectations coming into this race and felt I was in the best shape of my life. The race felt otherwise. Swim started out rough due to my wave's start time swimming directly into the sun. I could not sight at all so just followed the bubbles, which put me in the melee where I really don't like to be. Slow swim but pushed through. I did swallow some lake water, which visited me later..... Bike started out great and I felt pretty strong. The temps were well over 90 so I tried to keep my body cool by pouring cold water on my legs and body, which felt great but I did not think about the fact that I was not drinking enough water. Nutrition was fine but I ended up dehydrated and the lake water came calling about 70 miles into the ride making for a miserable remainder of the ride but again I pushed through. The wind also made the ride pretty exciting. By the time I hit the run, I was dehydrated and nauseous so the first few miles were spent leap frogging port-a-potties. The dehydration was causing leg cramps and running became a challenge so I found a comfortable walk/run pace and stuck to that. I think I walked more than I ran but I kept pacing consistent. I finished well beyond my goal but I pushed through a lot of pain that day so it was a good day!

Very solid day out - early starting wave for good swim position pulled me through near the top 20, split of 24:28 which was great considering the lack of draft. The bike course is about 10% longer than usual at 44.3km and has 475m of elevation gain. I had another strong leg (261W normalized was right around the 83% of FTP I was looking for, 12th on the day) to set up for my weakest discipline on the run. Carrying 95kg up what felt like constant uphill drags was sapping, but I set a PR for a 10km in-race at 50:40 and made the top third of runners by the time the finish line approached a few hundred metres later which is unusual (70th/249). Very satisfied with that as a season opener in general - transitions were faster than my first effort by a few minutes as well, and running feels less painful as I continue to lose weight! Onward to my first Half Ironman at the end of July. https://runsignup.com/Race/Results/76843/IndividualResult/GBCG?resultSetId=320402#U59878993

3rd time doing this race, but first time on the new course. They made some nice adjustments to the run course and overall much improved course. Swim was slow and continues to be a weakness for me. Bike had headwind most of first half of the course. I focused on keeping good effort knowing I could go fast on the way back. Everything was going well until I took a corner at ~mile 48. I came in fast and turned into a cross wind, which took me very wide and I hit a traffic cone. I went over the handlebars hitting hard. I was unsure if I would be able to continue. After a couple of minute to assess the damage, I decided to try an go on. Finished the bike very conservatively and decided to try the run with some road rash and a sore hip. I managed the run pretty well and turned in the 2nd best run time for the AG. 2nd place AG finish for the race was a great result for me considering the adversity.

800M Swim, 12 Mile Bike and 5K Run. This was my first race of the season. With only 5 weeks of training on my legs, I didn't have high expectations. All of my swims leading up to the race were done in a swim spa, so this was my first open water swim. The water was 63 degrees so I wore my wetsuit. It was a little tight as I still haven't shed all of my winter wool. Like most races, I finished in the middle of the pack. At T1, I had trouble getting my feet into my bike shoes (I leave my shoes clipped in and do a running mount). These are new shoes and I have decided to change over to another pair that will work. I kept to a conservative Bike and avoided getting into pissing wars with other cyclists. About halfway through, two younger athletes passed me and I decided to tag along with them, keeping a 20 yard cushion to avoid drafting. They pulled me past at least five other cyclists. T2 did not go great as I had to sit to put on my running shoes (big taboo for a fast transition). I am glad I rode a conservative bike as my run is not quite there yet. I still need to lose another ten pounds to be at key race weight and have lost 8 pounds since this race. People who don't normally outrun me did this time. This was OK. I got the cobwebs out and know what I need to do for my next race on 7/31/22: practice my transitions and get a few open water swims (which I have done).

Decent race. Swim was faster than the last time I did this race as was the run. The bike was a little slower due to an issue on the decent down Left Hand but still a decent bike split. I had some minor issues on the run but pushed through.

Great race despite a subpar swim. I had goggle issues on the swim that led to some sighting issues so a slower than normal swim. My transitions were fast and my bike and run splits were solid. I went into the bike with the mindset of going all out and it paid off. I pushed myself on the run and passed the second place winner in my age group about 400 meters from the finish! This was my first true podium finish and it was a great race!

Shock to the system! Swim and bike legs were good as expected - I have been training well and in a starting field of 63 long course triathletes and 12 aquabikers I exited the water in 5th place overall (31:54 swim split) and held 21.1mph on the bike to remain up in 6th with what felt like good nutrition. I got through two full bottles of energy drink, four gels, and two extra bottles of electrolyte as the forecast was for a very hot run. The wheels came off on one of the long out and back stretches under the 90+ degree sun and the rest resorted to run-walk between aid stations for a sad looking 2:36 half marathon. I've been training so much better than that in the run-up including some long, hot brick sessions, but nothing to prepare for this. Relatively comforted by the other struggling athletes around me, I came across the line in 22nd place for the men, 7th in my age group - but tough not to be a little disappointed at what might have been. I'll be back to run a proper 3rd leg in the next few months and break under the 5:30 barrier, but for now feeling ok to be sub-6.

Really fun race with a great after race vibe This is a great course to shoot for a PR. The only problem is that the swim start is based on age, and not self-seeding, so it's easy to get bogged down. May have to figure that out next year. Lake swim was really nice, but see above for slotting. This caused a lot of us problems (I'm 50) getting stuck behind much slower swimmers (see breast-strokers) and others, and I am not that fast a swimmer, at about 1:44/100 race speed. Bike was designed to really settle in a push it. No big climbs and lots of flat sections. Only 1300 feet total climb. I will race here next year and this will be top of mind. Run was similar, and with only 400 feet of climbing, it was a bit tougher than bike, but not crushing, and no prolonged or steep climbs at all. After-party was great with tons of friends and food and a really great atmosphere. Most fun race in a while, and I almost always have fun racing.

Sneaky tough race. Swim was a delight, downriver in the Kennebec, wetsuit optional so went with Swimskin, with no turns until finish. Bike was tougher than anticipated with constant rolling hills and 2-3 big climbs, total approx 3100 vert, and virtually zero flats. Some downhills that were a blast, topping out over 44MPH, with a great one flying into the city to finish the one loop course The run was relatively flat with the exception of a few very short but steep inclines. The majority of the double loop was on a paved rail trail in the shade. Temps in excess of 90 degrees by time I finished at noon, so the shade was a godsend. I'll do it again!

This race was an odd distance. 1 k swim 16 mile bike (shortened from 23), and 4.4 mile run. Fun distance to try and push your limits. Swim venue was nice and water was perfectly calm. Bike course had an extremely rough stretch of road on the out and back course. Run had some shade but not a lot of help with the extreme Texas heat. Good day for me and a fun event.

Tough day: 46 degrees and wet. The swim became a two lap swim due to the fog on the lake since the buoys were really hard to see. I still had a decent swim and took my time to gear up in transitions. My feet were soaked within the first ten minutes of the bike and completely numb by mile thirty. I held back on the first lap of the bike due to the conditions and then opened it up on lap two and made up some ground. I went into the run feeling great and had a great run. A solid 2 hour run split despite running in mud and rolling my ankle. I put up the fastest run split in my age group. This was my first podium in Boulder and I am really happy with this result. I pushed through some tough conditions and executed a solid bike and an even better run!

What a great race. This was the first triathlon I did back in 2014 and it took 1:45 minutes to complete. I have always had a goal of getting on the podium at this race and it finally happened plus a PR for the bike, run, and the course in general. I went out hard in the swim and breathed out at about 200 meters and had to stop to collect myself. I recovered and finished strong but knew I was behind my competition. I put up a solid bike split and the fastest run split in my AG, which was also the fastest 5K I have run, ever! Great day and a great way to end my season of local races.

I did pretty well hitting my power numbers on the bike and had a good bike split. Temperature got hot during the run, but I held on for a decent pace and finish. Happy to get 2 age group wins in 2 days. Kerrville Tri Fest is a well-run super fun event and a great venue. Highly recommended.

This was a bit of a redemption race for me. After qualifying in 2021, I had a sub-par performance at the 2021 70.3 Worlds race. I vowed to qualify and return in 2022. While my place in the age group was not what I hoped for, I executed my race as planned and I am happy with my performance. Swim was on par with expectations, power on the bike was right where I wanted it, run was strong and on target, and I executed my nutrition plan.

Great Race for me! A storm delayed the swim by 30 minutes and made for a choppy swim with the current pushing me to shore. I was on course for a much faster swim but the chop and current slowed me down a bit. Still a PR swim! The bike was solid and exactly where I wanted it to be. My power meter went out in the first thirty miles so I road using HR and speed as my metric along with RPE. The run started great but my feet ended up pretty blistered about half way through from the humidity so I walked more than I wanted to. Still a PR and I finally cracked the top twenty in my AG at an Ironman!

AfternI finished the race, I ran 7.53 miles back home (my wife dropped me off at the start). I ran with a lot of fatigue since the day before also entailed a swim, 104 mile bike and a 5 mile brick.

Race Report

Perfect day for the swim and bike legs of the race; heat and humidity spiked before my start to the run due to a front that blitzed through. Low 60s at start – 50% humidity; bike mostly in low 70s with no discernible humidity; temps and humidity jumped badly for the run. Swim was full contact. It felt like that old Clif Bar commercial where the guy gets pounded on with buoys (YouTube “Clif Bar Triathlon Start”). I learned a day after the race that athletes who self-slotted from 1:00 – 1:10 and 1:10 – 1:20, like me, got pounded. I wanted to get up to the 1:00 – 1:10 spot on beach before the start but the whole swim area really got choked up about 100 feet from water, then opened back up on beach. Important note for next IMLP – get in line early for swim. Paced right where I expected, and same as 2021, at 1:49/100 yards, but feel like I would have been better had I started forward. Trying to hold the cable was almost counter-productive as I was getting swum over from all angles. I saw a breast-stroker before buoy one, and a back-stroker at the first turn, so they were all out there. At the risk of offending anyone, breast stroke should be illegal or have its own start. It’s too dangerous. My wife saw a woman TKO’d by a heel to the cheek-bone. Bike was downright glorious. Temps never seemed to crack 72 degrees, and stayed dry and humid-free until the end. New pavement on both sides of Keene made for a spectacular ride; the out a back to Haseltine was even dry under the trees, so fun, and the winds on the Bears never really amounted to much. Of the four times I have done the full ride (two IMs, and two training camps), this race was by far the best conditions all-in. Averaged 17.5mph for ride, 170 watts, 1.16 VI, about where I hoped, and 33:29 better than 2021. At about 2:00 in the afternoon on the ride, there was a serious downpour, but that was ahead of me, so I escaped unscathed but with soaking wet pavement and steam from road from Whiteface on. Temps and humidity jumped, making a tough go of it for the marathon. Started run a bit slow to sort out a minor digestion situation, most likely to gel-dominated diet, but rallied from miles 3 – 9, at which point fatigue started to show. I slogged on through mile 20 when I got pretty lightheaded, so I took a break at an aid station while downing two cups of pretzels and water. That put my head right and I closed out with a 5:00:32 marathon, 07:13 better than 2021. During the bike and run my nutrition was exclusively Maurten gels, with and without caffeine, Gatorade Endurance, a few Maurten bars, and volunteer provided bananas on bike and run, adding pretzels and whatever liquids and ice were provided. I consumed two tubes of BASE Salt during the bike, and one during the run (even got a nice canker sore for the effort). At every station I drank at least one cup of water and dropped another cup of ice in my tank top. I Included 5 Nuun Energy tablets (with caffeine) in first 5 water bottles of the ride. According to WHOOP, my calorie burn was 7996 calories, and by my inexact count, intake was 7385 calories, 1511 grams of carbs, and 9822 milligrams of sodium. At the end of a great day, an overall PB by 36:28 at 13:08:15 Division Rank 62, Gender 482, Overall 654
